राष्ट्रीय संग्रहालय संस्थान को सोसाइटीज रजिस्ट्रेशन एक्ट, 1860 के अंतर्गत 27 जनवरी, 1989 को गठित एवं पंजीकृत किया गया। इसे 28 अप्रैल, 1989 को विश्वविद्यालयवत् का दर्जा प्रदान किया गया। यह संस्थान, अपनी स्थापना से अब तक, कला एवं सांस्कृतिक विरासत के क्षेत्र में प्रशिक्षण और अनुसंधान के लिए देश में एक अग्रणी केन्द्र रहा है। यह संस्थान राष्ट्रीय संग्रहालय परिसर के अन्दर भी स्थित है। इसका उद्देश्य छात्रों को कला और सांस्कृतिक विरासत की सर्वोत्कृष्ट कृतियों के साथ सीधे तौर पर रूबरू कराना और समूचे शिक्षण के लिए राष्ट्रीय संग्रहालय की सुविधाओं, जैसे प्रयोगशाला, पुस्तकालय, भंडारण/आरक्षित संग्रहण तथा तकनीकी सहायक खंडों तक आसानी से पहुँचाना है।
